How
To Dress Up Workshop Projects With Veneer Faces
Veneer inlays are like precious stones. They attract the eye, meet
with instant admiration and increase as much as twofold the value of the
piece on which they are used.
Inlays and overlays are veneer assemblies (called "faces" in the trade)
measuring approximately 1/28" thick. They come to you assembled on a
sheet of heavy paper. If you are using the face as an inlay, route a
recess in the table top, box, lid, tray or other surface. Make the
recess slightly less deep than the thickness of the inlay to allow for
sanding level with the surface after it is glued down. Apply white
or yellow glue into the recess, not the inlay itself. If you apply
glue to the inlay, it may swell and not fit into the recess. Make
sure to mount the inlay paper side up. After the glue has dried
moisten the paper with a lightly dampened sponge and remove it by
scraping. Let the inlay face sit until all dampness is gone, then
sand the inlay flush with the surrounding surface in order to level and
remove any remaining paper or glue. Sanding should be preformed with
a finishing sander and 180 grit paper, finally finishing up with 220 grit.
No recess is required when applying an overlay, simply glue it paper side
up and remove the paper using the method described above. |
